🏀🏀Our Scotland/Menno Trapper Girls Basketball Team spent yesterday at Augustana University for team camp!🏀🏀

The Trappers played three varsity games against Little Wound, Stanley County, and Milbank. Throughout the day, the team continued to learn and grow together.

Camps like these are a great opportunity to challenge ourselves, improve our game, and prepare for the upcoming season. We're excited to keep building on everything we've been working on this summer and work toward a successful season.

Go Trappers! 🖤🏀💛

Sports Physicals, ImPact Testing for 2026-27

by Jim Kocer, AD

Students who will be in grades 6-12 next school year who want to participate in middle school or high school athletics can prepare by getting their physical taken now. At the May school board meeting, it was decided that every athlete needs a physical every year (this is a change from the past when it was required every other year). Parents should complete the front page of the physical form (health history) and take it to the medical provider of your choice. The student needs to have a physical form on record at the school. The physical form can be picked up in Justice Mehlhaff’s office or in the envelope outside of my office or printed from the site: www.sdhsaa.com (click on athletics, then athletic forms, then physical exams, and scroll down to the last two pages). Please return this to Jim Kocer or to Justice Mehlhaff’s office. If you have any questions, you can call me at 605-464-7743, or e-mail at jim.kocer@k12.sd.us. Thank you.

Another change is that the ImPact baseline concussion test needs to be done every year (for those in grades 7-12 going out for a sport, must be 12 on date of testing). Many students took it in April and this is sufficient. For those that were not required to take it for next year, this will now be, and it can be done in the school computer lab on August 5 at 8:00 a.m. Due to the number predicted that will need to take this, it would be appreciated if you contact Shaina Tycz at 605-583-2227 to schedule an appointment soon (this could be done at the time you take the physical if taken at the local clinic) rather than doing it on August 5.

Our local medical clinic information is listed below. Be sure to have the proper physical form with you.

Scotland Medical Clinic (583-2227): All providers working at the Scotland Medical Clinic are happy to offer physicals! Shannon Fanning, PA; Robin Myer, CNP; Ashley Nicola, CNP; Nancy Webb, CNP; Larissa Sanger, MD; Melody Shrack, MD; Carrie Fuhrer, PA. The clinic is offering two types of services for sports physicals: the regular sports physical for $25 to be paid on the day of the physical; or you can bring your child in for a yearly well-child physical, and we will add in the sports physical. The price of this would be determined by your insurance policy, with most insurances covering 100%. If you have a question on insurance coverage, please call the clinic so they can check your insurance benefits for you. You must call for an appointment and be sure to have the health history form completed and signed by a parent or guardian. The clinic hours are 8:00 to 5:00 on Monday-Friday and Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 12:00.—Melissa Gale, CEO, Landmann Jungman Memorial Hospital Avera.

If you choose to go elsewhere for your physical, be sure to take the physical form. Students will not be allowed to practice or compete until the physical form is in and the ImPact testing is completed. All of the forms should be turned in to Justice Mehlaff’s office or to Jim Kocer at Scotland High School.

Reminder: Sports Physicals & ImPACT Testing

If your student plans to participate in middle or high school athletics during the 2026–27 school year, don't forget to schedule their annual sports physical. Beginning this year, all student-athletes in grades 6–12 are required to have a sports physical every year.

Also, all current 7th graders and current 6th grade football players who are at least 12 years old need to complete the ImPACT baseline concussion test if they have not already done so. We are unsure if all incoming 7th graders completed testing this past spring, so if you're not certain, please check before the season begins.

For convenience, families can schedule their sports physical and ImPACT testing at the same time through the Scotland Medical Clinic. To schedule ImPACT testing, contact Shaina Tycz at 605-583-2227.

Students cannot practice or compete until both their sports physical paperwork is on file and their ImPACT testing has been completed.

If you have questions about athletic requirements, contact Jim Kocer at 605-464-7743 or jim.kocer@k12.sd.us.

Mrs. Emily Namminga Participates in National Training Focused on Agriculture Robotics, Automation, and Plant Systems ST. CLOUD, Minn. | Mrs. Emily Namminga, an agricultural education instructor at Scotland School District, recently participated in a national professional development training focused on bringing robotics, automation, sensors, coding, and plant systems technology into agriculture classrooms. The Agriculture Robotics and Automation Technologies field test was held June 23 through 25 at St. Cloud Technical & Community College in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The training is part of AgCentric’s National Science Foundation supported ARAT project, developed in partnership with CASE 4 Learning to help agriculture teachers prepare students for the changing technology needs of agriculture. Mrs. Namminga was one of 20 agriculture instructors selected from 11 states and Puerto Rico to participate in this year’s ARAT field test. Educators represented Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico. This year’s training focused on Plant Systems and how automation, data, sensors, and engineering design can be used to help students understand modern crop production and agriculture technology. Participants worked through hands-on lessons and activities connected to electricity, switches, circuits, flowcharting, coding, sensors, data displays, relay switches, safety systems, autonomous mobile robots, and automation in plant science. The training also connected classroom activities to technology already being used in agriculture today, including robotics in dairy production and technology used in crop irrigation. These examples helped instructors see how sensors, automation, data, and human decision making work together in modern agriculture. As part of the training, participants visited the farm of Anna Bregier, Vice President of the Irrigators Association of Minnesota, to learn how technology is used to support crop watering decisions. During the visit, instructors heard from the farm’s irrigation manager about how water is managed across the growing season and how data, crop observations, and field experience support those decisions. The farm visit also highlighted the importance of ground truthing data, which means checking information from technology against real field conditions before making management decisions. The visit gave instructors a practical example of how technology, data, and human expertise work together in crop production. Highlights of the training included: * Exploring how sensors collect and display information for agricultural decision making * Learning how coding and automation logic can be used in plant systems * Working with circuits, switches, relays, and safety features * Connecting autonomous mobile robots to agricultural applications * Applying the engineering design process to plant science challenges * Learning how robotics and automation connect to real-world agriculture * Reviewing and field testing curriculum activities before broader classroom use * Providing feedback to help refine the ARAT curriculum for future agriculture classrooms The ARAT curriculum is being developed to help agricultural education programs integrate STEM skills into real-world agriculture applications. The curriculum will support teachers as they introduce students to the tools and systems being used in precision agriculture, automation, plant production, equipment technology, animal systems, and data-driven decision making. As a field test participant, Mrs. Namminga contributed feedback to help improve the course content, activities, and delivery methods. Once finalized, the ARAT curriculum will be available for adoption by agricultural education programs nationwide. To learn more about the project, visit: www.agcentric.org/education-training/agcentric-case-nsf About CASE 4 Learning CASE 4 Learning provides rigorous, hands-on agricultural curriculum and professional development for middle and high school classrooms. CASE courses emphasize inquiry-based learning, technical skill development, and real-world applications that help prepare students for future careers in agriculture. About AgCentric AgCentric is the Minnesota State Northern Agricultural Center of Excellence. AgCentric supports agricultural education through innovation, workforce development, and strategic partnerships serving food, fiber, and natural resources sectors.
